Hi all
I recently changed my computer and I'm just wondering what to do with MP3 ripping. On my old box that ran Win98, I had a great big collection of ogg and mp3 files all stored in artist/album folders, ripped from my CD collection with RipTrax software.
It worked great with my portable mp3 player, an IRiver IHP-120 (with Rockbox firmware for extra leetness) that can play either format (but not WMA or AAC) and appears as an extra hard drive when you plug it in to the PC.
My new machine runs XP and at the moment just has Windows Media Player 10 and the Lite version of Winamp. I'm looking for some new ripping software that will let me add to the collection of MP3z I've already got rather than starting from scratch, and will work with my MP3 player and won't bother me with any kind of DRM or encryption. I know Windows Media Player will rip, but I can't help feeling that it'll refuse to recognise the stuff I've already done, or worse still, encrypt it and make me give $200 to Lars from Metallica to unlock it
So I'm wondering what you guys all use? I'm interested to know even if you're on MacOS or Linux, or even something really nerdy like FreeBSD

I use Sound Juicer for ripping CDs as FLAC audio, then I convert them to mp3 with mpeg321 if I want to put the music on a portable device. ogg123 is useful as well, but I don't have a portable ogg media player. I use quod libet to listen to music on my computer.
Audacity is useful for chopping up audio files, but I usually don't bother because I'm lazy. :P

dbPoweramp Music Converter (search Google) is the best one I've seen so far as far as easy/quick/quality/and general versitality. It's no longer free (like 3 bucks), but I can send you the free one if you want. It's the same thing, only now they have to pay some sort of encoding license fee.
I also highly recommend Audacity for general purpose editing.

I'll 3rd the Audacity... mainly as an editor but I also make Ogg Vorbis files and load em onto my cell phone that I use like an mp3 player all the time at work (got a 2gig minisd and loaded up TCPMP media player that will play just about any audio and video file on my phone (SDA).
