I dissasembled a microwave oven transformer, which i have modified with a low voltage high current secondary. Now, because the E section of the core was composed of different plates wich were difficult to glue together, i welded them. Now when i assemble the E and I segments (with the primary and secondary inside of course) and clamp them together, it works but i think that the primary is cosuming more current and it is running hotter than before.Could this because i welded the core?Also does the polarity and orientation of the coil matter?Becasue depending on the orientation of the coil the standby (open circuit) current of the primary varies between 3-7Amps.

Darth This because of two reasons 1./ the core is small compared to capacity as uwaves use the xformer a near full power so the idle current is high due to too smaller core. Not a problem in the uwave in normal use 2./ Welding the core back together will raise the eddy current loses causing the core to grt hot.

It depends on how and where you welded it. MOTs have welds in them, but they are welded in such a way that eddy currents do not form. Actually they do, but they are minimal. Attach some pictures so we can see what you're talking about.

They are two weld going horizontally(crossing all the plates). I dindt think they would cause any problems, because i saw that there were some welds on the core.
