In general the most common one is the SGTC, it is also the most powerful as no matter what, if your budget is large enough, you can get giant ass transformers and capacitors they are also the oldest going back to the days of the original Telsa's coil.
DRSSTCs are very efficient therefore you get closer to the power you put in then if you built a SGTC the same power input rating. However they are rather complex to make and need alot of experiance and can have some costly components (IGBTs and Capacitors)
SSTCs are rather popular as they are fairly simple compared to a DRSSTC in calculation terms from what ive seen and there is a large amount of help on the internet to make them.

yes, but it may be difficult to build a mmc with the voltage rating you need, and you DEFINITELY need to make sure the fragile secondary is submerged in oil and is filtered from the TC's oscillation and triggering.

Maybe, but I'm unsure if a higher input voltage equals a higher output voltage in regards to Tesla coils. If the coil is in tune, then feeding in more current will yield bigger streamers with no need to increase the input voltage (for example, a 15kV/60mA transformer can produce larger Tesla coil streamers than a 15kV/30mA unit).
Also, as Ben said, the MMC would be difficult. It is common to build an MMC to withstand 4x the input voltage for a good safety margin, so if you're using a common 75kV X-ray transformer, then your MMC should be rated around 300kV or so. And the fragile X-ray transformer will be vulnerable without a monster ~150kV RF filter...
Probably would be cheaper to go with a 25kVA pole pig!
