Hey, so ive just one these diffusion pumps: im wondering, what oil and such will i need to get them to run (however i still need to buy the roughing pump and rest of the gear)

Nice catch. Loads of usable equipment there.
I would go for DC704 or any of the equivalents (KJL704, LDS704, D7040 etc.) in these pumps. It is by far the easiest one to get of the modern pump oils, and it's the most affordable one too. And it can stand air inrush accidents without too much trouble.

Also a cold trap made from Peltier units would be an excellent idea. I've experimented with using BiSnPb alloy as a casing, the trick here is to encase the pipe in the alloy with four square sides and then clamp a Peltier to each one. The outside edges then go to four large heatsinks with fans, such as recycled Pentium ones. Another useful tip is to recycle heat pipes from defunct laptops (cough *P DVx000 /cough) as these can take up to 80 Celsius delta T.

i see, okey, when they arrive i plan to work out the diameter and buy some steel vacuum pipe (e.g. NW50, NW100, NW60 ect.) and then find the largest peice i can for a vacuum chamber.
