I am interested in interfacing a webcam to a microcontroller for use in remote surveillance (mountaintop weather stations, high altitude meteorological balloons, etc.)

The problem is I would like the u-controller and the camera module to talk to each other enough to take a still snapshot every few seconds or so (30fps video is not really needed..and my radio link doesn't have enuf bandwidth anyway..)

I would like to find an extensive datasheet or a good application note outlining how to talk to this device... I feel a bit overwhelmed at the possibility of having to reverse engineer a linux driver.. Does anybody have any suggestions? Google does not yield much useful info...however, you all may have some links that I missed!

Thanks!

I also wanted to do a project like that but never got the guts up to dive in. confused If you need, I have an extra sn9c10x based webcam, striped down to the components.

Have you played around with the cam in Linux much? I had problems with the drivers, and my computer would occasionally reboot when using them.

I found this on Sonix website: www.sonix.com

Good Luck!

Thanks for the messages guys!

I have been playing around with a QWare Easycam. I am using Linux kernel 2.4 on my PC.. The driver only works on kernel 2.6...(In fact, the driver is already installed in version 2.6) I am procrastinating with an upgrade...too many other things to do..

I went to the Sonix website and registered..hopefully within a couple of days, I will be able to download docs that are a bit more useful than the marketing blurbs found on their guest site..

I'll let you know how it goes.....

EDIT 20060901:
Found a datasheet on SourceForge. Gives command set.. I think I'll have a more detailed look at the linux driver to understand the use of the commands. The microcontroller has some basic USB libraries, so I will not have to write them from scratch, but I am trying to understand the protocol better (this site is interesting and informative...
