I would like to know how to build one of the simplest but most powerful version of the half bridge flyback driver and I think dr dark current could help me because he has made a half bride before also I don't have an O-scope. Is the half bridge better than the zvs
Thanks

Hi, I used the IR2153 control IC, which is not really that great. A better way is to use an oscillator (eg. 4047), a gate driver (eg. a pair of UCC drivers) and a GDT.
The half bridge driver has advantages and disadvantages over the "zvs" driver. Its advantage is that the transistors see only 1x Vin, the disadvantage is that the transistors need to switch the reactive current and there is no zero voltage switching (=large switching losses). Transistors in the "zvs", on the other hand, switch only the real input power, but see pi-times the input voltage.

If you are just driving a half-bridge or full-bridge open loop (i.e. no feedback), you can just use a 555 timer, TL494 PWM controller (a generic, easy to use PWM controller IC), or any other PWM type IC.

As far as gate driver goes, the more popular ones are the UCC37322 and UCC37321 which are 9A gate drivers.

Sorry to interrupt, but in the ZVS driver why do the transistors see pi times the input voltage? I know it's something to do in the waveform but my limited knowledge is stopping me... I've always wondered why the ZVS schematic said "use semiconductors with a VDS rating of almost 4x the supply voltage". I not sure how you could gain a voltage higher than the input voltage (apart from a voltage multiplier or similar).

Don't quote me on this, but I think the higher voltage appears across the primary tank (primary coil and cap) due to resonant rise, since the transistors are switching at the circuit's resonant frequency.
