I have drawn a schematic for replacing fragial ucc37322 devices for tesla coils. Primary and secondary coil are based around steve wards "Micro SSTC" coil driver. My hopes are that some one will be capable of helping optimize componet values and schmatic.
C1-0.1uf R1-10k R2-100k D1-1N4841 D2-1N4841 D3-12volt zerner T1-2n3904 T2-2n3906 T3-IRFP260

I have tested this and it seams to work well.

note: "Button is to start the tesla coil." "R2 is for adjusting sensitivity." "D3 connects to +12VDC and ground only."

I have started developing this because of the number of ucc37322 and simular things I have burned up. simply It cost to much to buy more, so I want to try to make something better for SSTC's

yep, that driver of Dr. Dark Current is very rugged. I had to use this same discrete gate driver in replace of those fragile UCC chips... And this discrete driver can drive much larger load(gate capacitance) depending on the output P/N Mosfets. Actually, this driver drives the IGBTs of all my coil.. and i had no problem with them.. Thanks for sharing this Dr.DC

You could also try to use the discrete push-pull mosfet driver Steve Ward used in his Universal Driver. This particular circuit came directly out of an old MOTOROLA app note if i remember correctly (it was in an application note for a 500V push-pull driver for a solid state Grid Modulator circuit) - i'll try to find it and post it - but includes a good write up on the theory and test data of the circuit. Its a nice circuit - simple and does the job, and if you choose the MOSFETs careflly, you can get an awful lot of output current. Some use pre-packaged matched n/p MOSFETs such as the ones Fairchild makes. FDD8424H i believe.

EDIT: Couldn't find the app note in my quick 10 minute search, but here are some links to some others using the same circuit in different applications along with simulation / datasheet data:

Here is some additional information on that circuit:
There might be a link to the original datasheet app note if you look through all the posts:
