Fantastic system you've got there RateReducer, surprisingly large arcs for the power input! Are you worried about the diodes in the doubler getting destroyed from high pulse currents? (I mean the large discharges from the caps when you strike an arc.)

Could you post a schematic for me? I would like to build one

Maybe you could start with something using more readily available components (the transformer core(s) and doubler in particular), since you might find it difficult to gather everything needed to replicate this circuit exactly (and especially have it run reliably at 5kW)?

I've been looking at building this simple bridge circuit for testing a couple of used IGBT bricks I've found: 555 IGBT half bridge

Also, I found this site to be helpful for getting a grasp on the basics of bridge design: H-Bridge Basics

Thanks! cheesey
The diodes do their job quite well but they get f.... hot! They even meltet a hole into the plastic enclosure that stores the diodes and the oil, meesing up my carpet -__-
I need to get a bigger enclosure with more oil in it than just one cm so that the diodes do not become so hot...

Hi.
I did it all on my own. No schematic used...
Just google it...

There is no good flyback-halfbridge. Its just a simple halfbridge.
You can use a TL494 as oscillator.
UCC37322 and UCC37321 for GDT

Just try it! it is not that hard.

Im guessing the brick you have there in use is a CM300?
Im thinking of buying one off EVR as their used ones are only $99
I do wonder how well tested the used ones are, if they are tested with current and voltage ect.
as whenever i think of buying used semiconductors i get scared il buy a load of zombie ones

Im currently working on my room/ workshop, once ive got the benches all set up and the 64-80A cable run upto my room i plan to build some things like this, mabye scaled up abit ;D

No it is not a CM300 wink
2MBI300S-120 300A 1200V 40nF on the Gate ^^
It is a used one from Ebay. Only 20€! wink
I think if you buy your used bricks at a trustable seller it will surely be in a good condition.

is the lower the gate capacitance, the better?

Awesome set up! Terrifying arcs, what oil are those diodes under?

__=|(:3)-|--{__: Lower gate capacitance means that there is less current needed to drive your IGBT which is good wink But if you have a nice gate drive, high gate charges are no problem at all.

HDF49: Thanks! It a special HV insulating oil from an X-Ray transformer.

Ah ok, that's pricey stuff. How did you come across the X ray power supply?
