I regularly see references to the book "Procedures in Experimental Physics", and it has been recommended to me by several people. I have always had an eye out for it, but I haven't been lucky so far. Until a few weeks ago, that is. While googling the title like many times before, I discovered that archive.org had uploaded a copy of it, and like all the other excellent stuff on archive.org, it is of course free.
Now, having read the book, I can warmly recommend it to anyone with even a vague interest in hobby science. Even though it's from 1938, most of the information is still very relevant, and I was blown away by the complexity and ingenuity involved in the projects. The projects include a nanogram balance, a vacuum induction furnace and and a geiger coincidence counter, all made with materials from the corner hardware store of course.
