Not a bad setup, I can see how this would be useful for some applications.
It would certainly be enough for the filament feeder, possibly a coarse X/Y tray alignment with a more precise linear motor and calibration for the really fine stuff.

Little bit crude, they've failed to close the flux loop at the back, so it will be down on torque, but looks like it works great, particularly if they gear it down.
lets not confuse science fair demos as designs you can use in real applications. yes, you could use it for something, maybe a 3D printed clock, but when it comes to moving real stuff, real steppers are cheap, common, and standard. plus since we have all sat around winding copper around various things, you won't have to spend time doing that
