Hundreds of people have been left injured after a meteor streaked through the skies above Russia's Ural mountains.
Fragments of the meteor fell to the ground, breaking windows and setting off car alarms in the Chelyabinsk region while a series of loud bangs caused panic amid initial fears there had been a plane crash.

I wonder if this meteoroid has been keeping company with asteroid 2012 DA14, which is due to brush past us later today.
I was thinking that too, but according to something I read on the internet 2012 DA14 is coming from the opposite direction to the one that hit Russia.
Still 2012 DA14 apparently is not just one rock but a big ball with lots of smaller fragments orbiting it, so the next few nights we might have some good sights as the smaller fragments burn up in the atmosphere.

I'm surprised that there was no mention that they saw this coming. Or maybe they did I haven't read too in depth yet. I wonder if it was too small to see maybe? I wouldn't think so but who knows...

AFAIK, there is only one meteoriod that was detected & tracked in space before hitting Earth. Two or three years ago? The alert went out less than 24 hours before impact. Response was hailed as a good exercise of "the system", with observations from a dozen places and accurate calculation of the entry time and place. That was in uninhabited desert of Sudan, and the only known human sighting was from an airliner a couple hundred miles away. Didn't take long for investigators to start finding the meteorites.
The one that hit Russia might have been slightly bigger, but maybe darker. Maybe coming from a direction unfavorable for observation, or at a time when favorable places on Earth had few telescopes watching for asteroids.

Thats interesting. I read a NASA article not long ago about how they have all the resources and tech to spot objects in space before they ever get close enough to hit us and bla bla bla and that we'd have a heads up if so. Yet this happens. Pretty scary! Maybe its like you said, darker and small in size, probably gets overlooked.

I remember reading some years ago that the infrasonic signatures of meteroids impacting the atmosphere had first been discovered - and kept secret - in the course of Nuclear Test Ban surveillance. Apparently, the infrasonic signals emitted by meteoroids are very similar to those of nuclear explosions and caused false positives to be recorded several times per year.

Thats interesting. One "doomsday scenario" suggested during the Cold War was if Russian air defence picked up a "cloud of missiles" hurtling towards them and launched an automatic counterstrike before realising that the missiles were in fact a shower of asteroids.
