Greetings!
I have been lurking these forums for about a month now, initially glancing at some flyback driver schematics but the thought of making a tesla coil was more appealing. So here I am, in need of some assistance. At some point today (the day I planned on coating it with varnish, of all days...) I must have set my coil down in the wrong place, unbeknownst to me. I seemed to have placed a "dent" across 6 of my windings on my secondary coil. When I use a magnifying glass it seems like there is a bit of enamel scraped off in the cavity. Is the damage great enough to cause a failure on the secondary coil? And if so is it at all possible to fix it? The rest of my enameled wire went into the coil and I don't have the ability to pick up anymore anytime soon, otherwise I would just roll a new one and scrap the wire for some smaller experiments.
For scale, in the second picture the coil goes from ~1.25 in. to ~17.25 in. and the wire is 28 AWG.

Well, you definitely don't want the windings to come in contact with each other where the enamel has been scraped off. I cant really tell for sure but it looks like they are not touching. This wont necessarily cause a failure, But it could very well effect performance of the coil. Since you can't wind a new one, what I would do is just put extra extra varnish on it and really make sure it is coated extra well because now that spot will be prone to corona and you don't want racing sparks to form. So just insulate it heavily with enamel/varnish and you should be good as new.

Yep they can take a beating, here are some pictures of one of my 9" diameter coils after being stored in the garage during cool nights and accumulated a bunch of moisture in the coil. However after a little rework it was working good as new again.
Here is a video. The coil is on low power less than 1KW because of the volume. It was getting late and I didnt want to get the neighbors all worked up just yet...:)
