Hi,
Can anyone recommend some buck converter controller IC's? Its just like any electronic component there are lots of them to choose from, I am just looking for one to build my first buck converter.
Supply voltage will be around 12v (gel cell) and the final voltage needs to be around 6-8v at about 2 amps. One with some kind of built in current sensing or feedback loop is what I am looking for.

I recommend you start of at maxim-ic.com.
a) they do a lot of products b) especially in that sort of range c) they have a parameteric search tool, app notes, tutorials and data sheets to help you choose the part and design the other passives round it d) and when you're done choosing, they have a policy of providing samples to individuals, no questions asked
And no, I don't have shares in the company, but I do have a number of their samples in various projects.

The LM2676 is pretty popular. It runs down to 8v input and 3 amps out:

ti.com webbench utility. Stick in your power and voltage requirements and it picks out a bunch chips for you. You can optimize selection based on cost, footprint and efficiency. Pick a chip and you can run sims, re-optimise, and even get a complete BOM with part numbers!
