Anyone have any theories on what happened?

My best guess is an over loaded power station.

You know you are living the good life when you can trip a breaker at the substation level shades

It will be interesting to see if they post any details of what happened, I suspect a few people lost their jobs in the mean time...

What ever caused the outrage/power flicker is really of small conscience considering the metal halide lights in use are just a time bomb waiting to cause problems.

My guess is they will be investing in an LED lighting solution soon. There are a few products such as HiViz Field and Stadium using LEDs from VisionX, which are based on CREE diodes.

I know high power LED lighting is still evolving but it has come a long way and has a lot of potential in the near future.

What's supposed to happen? I assume the reflector is designed to contain a exploding lamp.

No, I meant a time bomb as in a problem waiting to happen. Meaning that if power is interrupted to a metal-halide lamp there is a cool down period before restrict can occur.

There is also another factor to consider which is a warm lamp takes longer to reach full brightness than a cold one. Look at half time for instance. The lamps are off for long enough to cool down almost completely allowing a normal start up time. However if the power is interrupted during use you must wait the minimum cool-down period then deal with a slower time to full brightness. Not an ideal solution when everything hangs on such finicky systems.

I'm sure there were other issues with power than just the metal-halide lamp cool-down times, sounded like one side had some electrons that were down as well like Telex. But that may have also been linked to server reboots and such, who knows.

Lights. Lots and lots of lights.

On the flip side, some people are now blaming malicious hackers as it appears the problem may have been caused by a signal sent to the "intelligent" SCADA circuit breakers via the Internet... this is unconfirmed however.
If true it is an effective demonstration of how vulnerable these systems are and serves to warn the Powers-that-Be to beef up security and set something other than "Admin" and "password" as the default login.

See Link2

LEDs if used in parallel with metal halides would provide light during the critical cool down/warm up sequence.
