Yep that is cool, despite the bulkyness.
You can get those portable overhead projectors though, which would reduce the size quite a bit as they fold up. Converting one of those by fixing the panel permanently would make a good project, but heat would be the only issue as the LCD would mess up if you didn't have some decent fans.
I've been wanting to make a projector for over 5 years now (well, on and off lol). An idea I had was to overdrive a 14" colour TV crt and project that through a fresnel lens, a bit like old rear projection TVs, but I never bothered because of the bulkyness. I doubt the results would be that great though, my local pub has an antique CRT rear projection TV and the picture quality is awful so I doubt my homemade version would be much better. LCD is the way to go, modding one of those cheap PS-one LCDs to run as a secondary display might be an idea, but again heat is always the problem. The advantage to the quick OHP projector is you can pick up a 14" LCD monitor off eBay with a faulty backlight for next to nothing. By running it as your secondary display on your PC, you can map the video layer to it - so that any video will play fullscreen on the secondary display no matter what's happening on your primary. This is what I do at home, I watch films and TV episodes on the TV behind me, with the media player minimised on my monitor here, so I just change chair depending on what I'm using the computer for An OHP should be easy enough to find in the trash around a school or university as they seem to be throwing them all out

I made one of those TV projector things several years ago. It worked, but the quality wasn't worth the effort (Well, it was for a 13 year old boy). I could get a broken OHP tomorrow if I wanted to, there's one where I work.
