Since there is no current limiting, or protection in between the electronic supply and the flyback, I'd expect it wouldn't be very reliable, and may die fairly quickly. Also many electronic lighting transformers do not work off of a reduced voltage (variac) or light dimmer.
Every aspect of the performance of this circuit relies on the electronic transformer being used. Each one produces different results, some may work, some may not. Very much a trail-and-error procedure.
