Hey guys, I decided to finally build a tesla coil myself and have started gathering the equipment. I got an 15kv @ 30ma NST off ebay, and just as a short experiment to show it worked, i made a simple jacobs ladder. When i hooked everything up and turned on the power, a small arc formed for a couple seconds then the NST shut off. It wont arc again unless i turn it off then back on again. I've looked inside the transformer and it's sadly filled with resin so i cant bypass what ever limiting circuit is causing this. What i was wondering is will this NST still work for a tesla coil?

It likely has a ground fault interrupter built in. These are not usable in a Tesla coil unless you bypass the protection. Can you post a picture of the transformer?

Definitely a GFCI issue. Happened to me with the first transformer I tried for my first SGTC.
I remember reading something from Richie Burnett saying that you could use the interrupter to your benefit, but it was a bit over my head. I'll keep looking for it, but it's somewhere on his page:

Thats too bad. The buyer I bought it off said it didn't have a GFI and that it was perfect for Tesla coils. I at least thought that was enough to think it would work. heres a couple pictures of it

Hmm, I can see "Complies with secondary ground fault protection requirements" written on the label. That seems to imply it is indeed equipped with some form of GFI. I think you've been tricked by a dodgy seller!
