With flyback mode you get a higher voltage than with push pull, and more than you ought to get from the turns ratio between primary and secondary. I think this is because energy is stored in the airgap, and also because flyback mode works by suddenly stopping the current, which means the voltage on the primary rises, due to the stored energy having nowhere to go. I don't fully understand it, but that's pretty much why you get a sudden HV pulse from the secondary.
With a 'normal' push pull transformer, the usual limitations of turns ratio and volts per turn apply. If you pump in more volts than the number of turns on the primary can handle, the core saturates and gets hot, wasting energy.
It's a 'black art' but I'm slowly learning it by reading the threads on here, etc.
push pull is the best driving topology, particularly as a full bridge but NOT as ZVS. With a full bridge push/pull driver your output voltage is not going to be limited by the driver, the isolation of the transformer itself is the limit, unless you place it under oil.
