Saw an ad for this today: Link2

I saw a lot of negative comments... anyone ever try something like it?

I found this, which describes how to recharge alkaline batteries @65mA, and warns not to charge them to more than 110% of their rated voltage or they split and leak acid. I doubt I'll try it though, as I have plenty of recharchable NiMh batteries, It has the circuit diagram, if you want to try, Scotch tape.

I used to recharge a lot of alkaline batteries, and had a lot of success with certain brands. This was back when I was at school and hardly had any money, but I had way too much time to experiment with things like this! One day I found a 'Battery manager ultra (some info here Link2 going cheap in a catalog return shop, so I picked it up.

What I found out over the years - pretty much any cells would recharge to a certain extent, but the only ones worth bothering with were alkaline. Some brands of alkaline cell would recharge well, where others would just heat up, appear to be taking a charge, but then go flat again and eventually leak. Surprisingly I found that 'expensive' alkaline cells (Duracell and Energiser in particular) would not hold a charge and weren't worth bothering with! I can't remember if they leaked, but certain cells that refused to hold a charge would then develop leaks days later.

I did however have a lot of luck with 'cheaper' alkaline cells - I remember finding that the best ones were Toshiba. I had 4 Toshiba AA's that I kept for over a year, recharging them many times with no problems at all! They would run my pocket TV for about an hour on a full recharge, which was about right for a new set of cells. I don't bother with AA's anymore, but I've recently retired 8x 'D' cells (Wilko own brand) that I bought around 2002, they have been through the charger about 4-5 times in total.

So I guess you'll get mixed reviews for anything like this, as it appears to depend so much on the cell manufacturer. I have no idea why some recharge better than others, you just have to be prepared to experiment cheesey

Last time this topic was raised on the forum I tried to recharge a 9 V battery at 20-30 mA and it blew the bottom out with great force after a few minutes.

My conclusion is that it is stupid to risk putting an eye out just to save a small amount of money on proper rechargable batteries.

button cells can be recharged multiple times, and once they're dead, plug them onto car battery and you have mini sharpnel grenades =D

I barely use primary cells nowadays. Calculator, watch, miniature desktop water fountain, that's about it. Was just curious as to how legit this is. Seems not so legit after all!

Thanks for the responses. Figured a few of you would have known a thing or two about it.

Also, many of the cheaper cells use mercury as a depolariser, which is very dangerous if it leaks out in gaseous form.
