I recently built a a TL494 driver a la scopeboy's site and wound a flyback with 1246 primary turns 12 primary turns. When I have it on it picks up some type of radio broadcast which is audible in the arc.
How would the flyback driver be able to demodulate an AM or FM signal like that?

Haha, do you live near a powerful radio or TV transmitter? I think putting the driver in a shielded metal case would work, also make sure you have decoupling caps everywhere and as close to the IC as possible.
I once had an audio amplifier with an IC, which would play a radio station when I touched one of the electrolytic capacitors.

Are you able to detect AM and FM or just AM?
im suspicious it must be AM, if it could demodulate a FM signal down , that would be even more worthy of investigation. remember AM recievers are the simplest, even a coin, razor and crystal can be used for those captured in POW camps.
a modded russian missle using AM/FM slope detection may have been the method used to down the first F-117 in the late 90's.

I agree it is more then likely AM. I wonder if the circuit that drives the fullbridge is being interrupted by the interference causing the switching elements to not turn on fully or at all depending on the strength of the signal.

ya... Long time ago the shaks in Rio de Janeiro that ae locate close to the AM brodcast station use long wire antena to absorve the energy, supplying the neon bulbs.. Free energy !
