Radioshack used to sell a card that would re-emit visible light from an invisible IR source.

does anyone know where i can get one or if there still made? i cant seem to find one.

does anyone know of a better way to align and check IR laser light? i tried teh digital camera trick, but my source is to weak, i just see the whitish-purple from the laser muzzle.

Old B&W CCD cameras with the IR filter removed are good across a wide range on IR, but temperature sensitive color changing films sometimes work better for alignment.

That brilliant lady Jeri looked at IR Quenching in Phosphors:

Perhaps craft glow-paint from $1 store will work, as it will be faster than shipping indicator cards.

Typically, adjusting the CCD "exposure" of the camera in a darker room will pickup IR well enough that a single LED will blind the sensor.

One of the few sites which sells stuff like IR upconversion phosphors to consumers (the link is for detection cards using such phosphors though).

PS. you should have prototyped with visible light :p

you can also get a red laser diode line generation module of like 5mW and substitute with the IR one once done

i have one, and i did, but i need to focus the round IR beam and then align the line, which can only be done with the final IR laser.

I have a little sample bag of UC 1 GREEN pigment from Glowbug. It glows green under IR. Try here Link2

See if someone you know has a Sony camcorder with night shot and will let you borrow it.
You could get a cheap CCTV cam with nightvision and use that. Or get a sacrificial webcam and remove the IR filter.
If the dot is small enough, and your laser not too powerful, you could even take the lens off the camera and hit the image sensor directly to see the beam cross section magnified to however big your monitor is. Although if it's too powerful it will just bloom or kill the sensor. Hit up a thrift store or e junk place and your bound to find one for a few bux.
