I got an e-mail saying that on August 27th, 2006 mars will be "as big" as the moon in our night sky. Is this true? I figured we'd be talking about it already, it'd be on the news, etc. But there's not much on google, and I found a couple sites saying it's a hoax.

This is simply a hoax. Every year this email gets sent out.
In fact, Mars is about the smallest it gets right now as its on the opposite side of the sun from us, plus being so close to the sun, you really can't see it anyways.

See, I thought it was a little off. Then, I read on a reputable looking site that August 2003 was the closest it's come in thousands of years and that sometime waaay after I die was the next time it would break that record. But I didn't want to miss it if it were true! Thanks for clearing it up, but I don't know what I'm going to tell the sweet lady that sent it to me...

If we started now we could build a viable launch and return vehicle set which could launch by 2015..
The main problem is currently the radiation level- however with new materials in development based around plastic/metal composites and shielded by a magnetic "grid" it might be possible to minimise the mass of the shielding.
