Just got my first spark ,seeing what a 15kv nst can do. Its spaced 1cm apart I thought i'll need 30kv..

Yay! smile

The 30kV/cm rule is a theoretical limit, it doesn't hold for electrodes with sharp points or uneven surfaces.

Also, a NST can make more than its rated voltage during the transient at switch-on.

try "needle-plane" gap.with 15 kV nst (21.2 kV AC voltage peak) arcing over 1.5-2 cm gap is possible.

I determined by experiment that a Tunewell 5 kV - 0 - 5 kV 30mA NST developed 14 kV across its unloaded secondary, which only fell to the nominal 10 kV when 8 mA was drawn.

Just for you, Steve, I will re-measure the unloaded secondary output with an electrostatic RMS voltmeter this evening, and report back accordingly.

when i was engineering my HV probes, i measured my own 12kv 33ma NST and it measured supprisingly high(unloaded), there are scope pics somewhere here on the forum...

This fact is well known in the fusor community, etc,

NST's are used to ignite plasmas, much the same as arc welders. They are designed to have a high open circuit voltage.

Congrats on finding a nice NST! They're getting harder to find every year. What make/model is your one? From the looks of the arc it's a 30ma NST?

I've had a 15kV/60mA NST for over 2 years now and it's been great. Very versatile and handy when you need some serious potential in a pinch. I also have a 6kV/30mA and a 12kV/60mA unit sitting around. The 6kV transformer is currently powering (for the first time ever!) a smiley face neon sign in my workshop, since it's dodgy ebay high frequency unit crapped out after 20 mins of runtime :p Iron all the way!
