i cracked my favorite laptops' screen, so i was pleased to find a 52 USD replacement on the great EBAY... however, while the screen works perfectly now...i get a boot error...

file: \boot\bcd
error: 0x000009e
followed by a HD possibly near death warning.

the hard drive is still good, i can use a SATA to USB device, and access all my old files on a known good laptop.

Idont usually bring up simply convetional computer problems here of the 4hv, but i really need help, and would be grateful for any advice/solution.

I was hoping there is a boot fixer or partition magic function i could attempt.

I have wasted a HD with little more than a sharp tap, it was still readable but got progressively worse ... I just ghosted it to a new one.

That said, just take a look at the SMART data and find out why the bios is bitchy.

In bios there should be a option to boot from usb drive, download Link2 and go to Link2 or for a hdd use the clone tools on the cd or linux live cd Link2

Andy, i dont have the ability to download that link with the500+Mb file/program... it just wont complete.

also, i dont think partition magic works with USB flash or hard drives. i have a cloning tool and the SATA-USB cable, but if the maiun drive wont boot on its own, the cloner wont work either..

You could use the repair function on the windows disk.
If you,re got a spare computer with a cd drive and windows disc you could try Link2 to make the iso and Link2 to copy it to usb drive.

when i try to get some of my jpgs off, i get a "cyclic redundancy error" i have access to the whole drive, but i need to make it bootable, or have a utility program to recover all valid files, i can stand to loose the already croupt files, but between now and my last back up kinda worries me.

i have the recovery partition on my windows 7 machine HD, but im using my XP machine to save the existing data...

EDIT: my most recent backup(data) is from 2 months ago, so it wouldnt be a total loss.
but i dont have a CD/DVD on my HP 311mini, so its just the recovery partition on the same questionable HD, ive also got another copy and paste fail due to "cyclic redudnancy check" what ever that is. my mini only has one SATA slot, other wise id be able to solve this easier.
