ok, so it looks like i need a small isolation transformer then.
Should I just hook it up between the variac and the rectifier circuit? I'm only looking at small variacs that can be plugged into the wall and powered up just fine.
There he uses a variac plugged into the wall to make a DC power supply. Near the bottom of the page he talks about how the variac does not provide "line isolation", which I figured I needed in case I accidentally shorted out my circuit. So I thought that I needed an isolation transformer in there somewhere, probably between the variac and the rectifier. His variac can draw up to 6A and he plugs it into the wall with no problems.
