Hi, has anyone else run into tin whiskers forming within days?
This PS3 was working fine but stopped reading, turns out that there was an internal short between R and B anodes which appears to be classic whisker formation symptoms.
did the 2.2uF/9V capacitor trick and unshorted it, now reads fine but not sure how long for.

No loss of power, I've seen this before on PS3 diodes with short between BDA and Gnd and RD-BD but normally it doesen't recover even if the whisker is blown out.

Thermally induced stress is one of the mechanisms behind whiskering. The lead in solder used to impede this (vs using pure tin) but after it's ban the problem has reemerged. Zinc an silver can also form whiskers, so that lead free silver bearing solder can also be prone to the phenomenon depending on the alloy.

Pretty interesting, albeit annoying as hell. Link2

It's not the same reaction but it reminds me a bit of mercurys reaction with aluminum. Mercury Attacks Aluminum

The forum didn't like that link. It was just the Wikipedia page for Metal Whisker, interesting stuff. Link2

EDIT: Nope. It's the brackets around the word 'metallurgy' that seems to be the problem.

Lol, that link takes me to the wikipedia page on whiskers (animal whiskers)!

This link might work!

It is pretty interesting when you get to it though.

(If you click on the 'quote' tab, you can copy and paste the link. It works then)

Google link shortener to the rescue. No cat whiskers here!

Need to add ( and ) to the forums link verification filter, regular expression, etc...
