Have you guys seen this problem before? My MiniDR seems to dislike lower breakrates (=less than 150Hz). I get plenty of flashovers from lower 1/3 section of the secondary to strike rail and primary.

Coil can sing all day long at 300-400bps and produce 3x secondary length sparks with no problems but if i go lower than 150Hz its difficult to get 1x secondary lenght without flashovers.

I have to admit that MiniDR does have a bit high coupling and strike rail is too close to secondary but i will fix these issues soon and place some lexan over the primary

The DC bus voltage will rise at lower breakrates, so the bangs get more violent. Also, the streamer load gets lighter, so the peak output voltage will increase, which increases the voltage gradient along the secondary.

I would reduce the coupling and increase the burst length to compensate.

I'm afraid placing some lexan over the primary won't be of much help.
Most likely energy per bang at lower rates is too large for coupling you use.

This lexan thing was suggested by steve ward some time ago. Of course it wont fix flash over problems but according to ward the lexan shield will have great deal in reducing fields at the primary.

Will see what happens if i raise the secondary little bit more, add the laxan shield and get rid of this current strike rail :)

BTW was putting covers on top of my primary in 2004/2005 way before Steve Ward even though of it @ Link2 .

Cheers,
Dr. Spark

Heehee.. but your primary wasnt flat tongue

Anyways, lets see whats going to happen. MiniDR is a bit different medium-small size DR since it has whopping 667nF tank cap and 200A semikron full bridge :)

Are you serious? You just lost my respect. You answered your own questions about over-coupling and secondary being too close to the strike rail in your first post. Why don't you work on that problem first before you whine for the sake of being heard? And then...you lay into Dr. Spark about not having a flat primary? Shame on you! Also, you mentioned that Steve Ward said that using lexan will have an adverse effect on performance. Since when? Dr. Spark has bee using this technique for many years. I used in pre-Zotzilla in 1990. You use Steve's name as though he walks on water. Excuse me? I remember when he sent Dr. Spark a POS circuit board that was so poorly crafted that when it failed a chunk of CM600 went whizzing past his wife's head...a bullet dodged. Since then, Dr. Spark went to solid buss, now in common use as well.

If you want to be respected by the Master Coilers like Dr. Spark, Steve Conner and others, then you need to earn it.

So go back to arm chair and dream on, dude!

Kind regards,
Dr. Hankenstein

Umm.. dude. I didnt meant to be rude, it was more like a joke. (Thats why i had tongue smile..) I made this topic just because this problem was new to me and the coil worked fine earlier with half bridge. This bang energy thing explained my Mr. Conner makes lots of sense and its fixed now. I think you are taking random forum rambling way too serious. And im sorry if there is a modern drsstc with flat lexan covered primary before ward did it with his dr2.

To be honest i couldnt care less about who did what first. I refer to mr. Wards findings simply because he has written A LOT about his work in here and at tcml.
