Hello all, I'm currently building my first TC and I see that the consensus on best electrode material is tungsten, but I was wondering if anyone has given any thought to using carbon, its a lot cheaper, more conductive, and has a high melting temp. .

You definiately want to go with Tungsten.
Just as they are good for arc type lights makes them poor for use as spark gaps. Mainly, once they get hot, they generally don't quench. The series resistance of carbon is also relatively high and they erode relatively easily changing the gap length of the spark gap and therefore changing the operational characteristics of the coil.
