I'm using two pairs of cores, side by side, with a combined cross section of ~20cm^2 for my ~50kv supply, in order to get more volts per turn. I'd prefer a round core of this cross section, but as far as I'm aware they are not available (at least not through the usual channels).

I'm envisioning some problems with a rectangular core, but will be using an ovoid bobbin. I also expect some cooling problems, but hope to keep frequency to less than 25kHz.

I'll watch this thread with great interest

OK, so now calculate the self-resonant frequency of the 5000 turn coil. :-/

Hi Dr Dark Current !

Im also very interested how to calculate and make a self- resonant transformer.

Actually I am using a very simple circuit that discharge a 2mF capacitor in a the primary of a ferrite transformer, the transformer secondary feeds a 1000 pF capacitor with 5000 volts peak. The primary capacitor is charged with 200V prior at each discharge.

Do you think that a self resonant thansformer may be more easy/advantage ?

The actual transformer parameters are:
- ferrite core 0.0002m2
- primary 25turns
- secondary 600turns #32AWG, 30 ohms dc
Secondary - no more than 30 turns per layer, interlayer insullation=0.2 mm polyester
Dry transformer, Glyptal varnishe impregnation.

If nescessary I will draw the circuit.

Thanks

Tony

Tony:
If you are pulsing the transformer with a single pulse, then the system is actually oscillating at its natural resonant frequency. I'm not exactly sure what you are trying to achieve... If you want to use a transistor driver, then measuring a resonant frequency of a finished transformer is simple.
PS. Why do you want to drive it at the resonant frequency? If you do so without a load, you will most likely burn the secondary winding and/or the transistor driver.

Dr Dark Current:

Let try to answer yours questions:

The circuit has to provide 2 or 4 pulses every 16.66 ms, (synchronized with the 60Hz line).

The concept is two tesla circuits in series. The first one has a 2mF cap that dischage 200V to the primary of the ferrite transformer T1. The secondary of T1 charge a 1000pF cap with 5000V. The disrupter is a sidac or a triac+sidad that discharge the cap when the voltage reaches +- 200V (positive magnitude and negative magniotude )

The second tesla ckt has a air spark gap set to 0.6mm that provide the discharge of the 1000pF cap to the second transformer T2. T2 has 2:15 turns and the secondary reaches 15000V. (a 6mm spark)

The voltage at the T1 secondary will be not more than 5000V because the air spark gap will disrupt such voltage.

Here the circuit:

Do you think ew cam optmize the tranform T1, in special reducing the secondary turns?
