For those who dont know, Art Prize is a yearly event that takes place in Grand Rapids Michigan, for 2 weeks. The event is made so artist from all over the world can come to a city, and display their art work to get voted on. Top 3? I think, get to stay in Grand Rapids. Today, one persons entry was to launch 2000 lanterns into the sky, at once. Well, people are people..At once never happens.

Since it was done in a number of movies, It's no surprise our city wanted to do just that. Love GR!

Was blocked in 250 countries due to audio. Reuploading under a new song and bypassing it.

I think he should be arrested for reckless endangerment, I don't understand how these things are legal for sale (not hypocrisy in my opinion, this is not like say lasers or even fireworks ... there is not one use case for these things which doesn't present clear danger to others, there is no way to use them responsibly other than at open sea).

Certainly in the UK, and I'd assume, in the States, people can be sued if the lanterns start fires, are mistaken for distress flares, or animals eat the wire frames and injure themselves. I believe this is far better than the 'blanket bans' that apply in Germany, Austria and elsewhere.

NB, these are not suitable to be released at sea because they can be mistaken for distress flares.

Well I guess that leaves deserts and salt flats then.

What's the problem with a blanket ban when a responsible use case is defacto non existent?

I do not like endless legal prohibitions,
how am I supposed to know what is legal and what is not?

How can 'responsible' be used responsibly?
Why should everything be useful ...
What responsible use is a Tesla Coil, or an electromagnetic projectile launcher,
or just about everything on 4HV?

since about 2000 were launched I would consider them much safer than fireworks if no harm was caused by this event.

so, anyone heard of death, injury, monetary loss etc due to these 2000 lanterns?

At the very least a Tesla coil makes a pretty light show ... and to injure others others have to actually get close enough to it, something which you and them have control over. You don't control the flight path which carry your Chinese lantern onto someone else's house.

As for <0.05% chance of injury, I seriously doubt fireworks get anywhere near that either ... also again, you can control the safety with firework use. You just roll the dice with the Chinese lantern.
