I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if there are any safety risks with holding old vacuum tubes next to a tesla coil. I ask because i have read often that tubes produces x-rays and such at high voltages. The tube in question for the time being is an OA3 and thats mainly cause it looks really cool when i hold it in the area of my pll coil. Please let me know if there is any serious risk of radiation and what not as well if you can tell me what tubes i shouldn't use. I do have an assortmant of many small tubes that i have pulled from misc things so if there is any type that shouldn't be held next to the coil please tell me asap as i would rather be safe. Thank you all.

The 0A3 is a voltage regulator, so it is filled with neon not vacuum. It is safe to hold this tube near a Tesla coil. However, a standard vacuum tube would really produce X-rays, if you put it close enough to a Tesla coil.

Any vacuum tube can generate X-rays. The worst offenders here (or best if you are seeking to generate x-rays) are the old style diode valves. The newer ones used lead glass so tended to put out far less, and then there are light bulbs. Watch out though as soft x-rays are generated which won't activate a beta/gamma tube but will dump energy in your cells (!)
