Hi,

Sorry about posting yet another question about oscilloscopes but I am just wondering about which out these two is the best overall.

OWON SDS6062

Bandwidth: 60MHz
Sample rate (Real time): 500MSa/s

And the Rigol DS1052E

Bandwidth 50 MHz
Memory depth 1 Mpts (CH1 or CH2)
Sampling rate 1 GS/s

I was originally looking at the OWON SDS7102 instead of the SDS6062 but since I am in college now I have decided that I am going to try and save some money for more vital things.

But anyway, which scope would be the better deal? I am inclined to think that the extra sample rate on the Rigol makes it better overall (plus its cheaper), but I am not sure.

Any opinions would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Also I did try looking around my local area for second hand stuff but there doesn't seem to be any sort of market for electronics design where I live. Also the company who own the closest thing to a junk yard around here have a "no scavengers" policy ) :

I'd agree that it's the sampling rate that is the deciding factor, but I've no experience of either (or any digital 'scope, for that matter).

There is a list of hamfests somewhere, I'll try and find a link, there ay be one coming up near you.

EDIT: Not the list I saw before, but here is one: Link2

I had a look on there but there was nothing with-in 100 miles of me. I probably live in the most boring county in the UK.

I finally went with the Rigol since it was the cheapest as it seemed like a good all rounder. And I hate to admit this, but I feel like a kid on Christmas morning already cheesey

Not that it helps the situation, but after considering the 'feel' of the rigol and GDS-1000 series, we decided the instek ones were nicer, mainly because you get an extra set of knobs for channel 2 so you don't have to switch between channels as often

see Link2

We got 2 of the GDS-1000 and a GDS-1000AU, the U series has a faster adc (and a bit more bandwidth), slightly more advanced menus, and a much deeper sample depth. For most applications I don't notice the difference, however when looking at fast signals the sample rate helps slightly, although for most signals the analog bandwidth is way more of a limiting factor than the sample rate, ex the tail on a square wave is many samples long. Furthermore, if your signal is repetitive (like most are...) they will all do dithering to give you effective sample rates that are insanely fast. The sample depth makes a big difference when you are looking at single pulses in single mode.

I personally would not look so much into the perfomance, because all of the scopes here will have similar performance, but look at the feature set/user interface/etc Is the capture software any good? How big is the screen? Viewing angle? What automatic measurements? The FFT functions ability...

Too late now I guess. Well if it turns out I want to change my mind then I have the Distance Selling Regulations act on my side.

Although I think it will more than likely be more of a scope than I will ever need for hobby stuff smile

My Rigol arrived today and all I can think is how did I ever manage without a scope before. I mean I have only scoped a few troublesome circuits so far and everything seems much clearer!

Also the cat nearly knocked over a glass of coke onto it mad Looks like I need to find somewhere better to put it rather than my bedroom floor.
