WD40 or oil is not the best thing to use. You can buy special aerosol stuff for this purpose (I forget the name of it, though).

isopropyl alcohol
you can drown it in overnight, grease and cigarette tar will dissolve if there is some, and let it dry one day in a hot place (not too hot)
isopropyl alcohol is common in grocery stores or pharmacies (the latter is better as it is pharmaceutical grade and there is no risk of aceton or other pollutants in it) and it is quite cheap
it is my cleaning product of excellence, it dissolves most of the glues and greases, even those stickers on books which are too hard to be removed by the hand
yesterday I even separated two old photographs which were glued with brown tape (from the early 90's) and it went away in a pinch

Also check for tin whiskers. I had an old piece of pro-audio kit where the encoder started to act up. It turned out there were little furry strands of metal visible between the 0.1" pitch PCB connections under a microscope!
