oh, ok. thanks. why are the coils often spaced further apart towards the end of the gun? is that a requirement?

No, I don't think there's any actual reason to do that.

there might be a good reason to do that: when using a single IGBT/Diode bridge and multiple SCRs for multiple stages, spacing the coils further apart towards the end might become necessary to provide enough time for the SCRs to turn off.
