So a few hours ago I had this bright idea of building a plasma speaker, but I have run into a few problems I could use some help with...

First, here's some pics of the transformer I just hacked together:

10 Turn Primary wound on first.

1346570559 3831 FT0 Flyback Transformer 011

A few layers of transformer tape wound on top of that.

1346570660 3831 FT0 Flyback Transformer 014

2 layers of teflon tape, then 3 layers after each layer of wire, total of 7 layers, ~300 turns.

1346570766 3831 FT0 Flyback Transformer 015

Finished off with a few layers of teflon tape, and then 2 layers of transformer tape

1346570968 3831 FT0 Flyback Transformer 017

Okay so firstly, with the transformer core being gapped, how will that effect performance driving it with a half/full bridge?

Secondly, how will having only 300 turns effect the output? I am not looking for a big arc, if I could stretch it to about 15-20mm I would be satisfied.

I am thinking of using an SG3525 to drive the bridge with about 40-50V on it, as I have seen a few videos of full bridge flyback drivers, and they can be quite impressive. Besides the SG3525 does anybody have any other suggestions for audio modulation?

I have an SG3525 laying here, along with a dozen or so IRFZ44's, just wondering if its worth doing it this way. Thanks in advance for any replies!

That's only a 1:30 ratio... That's not gonna do much arc wise. It'll be a low HV arc with a LOT of current; something undesirable when using plasma speakers. You want a ton of voltage, not a ton of current.

Yeah I figured that, I can always rewind it I guess...Just gotta find a few things first. Any suggestions for a driver though? How well do you think a PLL would do?

what wire gauge did you use? if you can manage it try some 36-40 awg with 400-600 turns. i wouldn't do a hlafbridge because then its not a flyback transformer anymore. the flyback effect is mostly what causes the hv because the flyback effect generates more than just the input voltag across the primary. running off say 12v, you could get many times that as primary voltage. then multiply that by the turns ratio.

as for the pll, thats how you're going to get the full analog audio signal: fm. just play with the vco input

The wire came from a microwave fan motor, and I would guess its 34 gauge. I should just scrap this idea and make a PLL tesla coil, like Uzzors2k's Link2

Something like a 1 inch secondary running at around 800kHz, I think that's what I'll do.

If you did a PLL, then you would potentially find the resonant frequency of your transformer... which could easily spell death for it and your circuit potentially, depending on how much ringing up is generated. IF you want a small HV transformer, you may be able to find and take apart a plasma globe of some sort; those have small AC flybacks in them that you may find useful.

Hmmm, I had forgotten about plasma globes, then again I haven't seen one in a few years. Maybe I should try to find one of those, could potentially make the whole thing on a single board. The search begins...
