Thyratron questions

Just found a brand new thyratron at the local junk store, its a 3CA3A made by Sylvania datasheet here

in the experiment i did last night, I used a lithium ion cell to power the filiment
and the source of HV, I used a ZVS driven flyback with 48v input.

at first with the filiment on and HV on, nothing interesting seems to happen much
but when power to the filiment was removed, the thyratron tube started to arc internally
,sparks were produced and the plate was glowing red hot.
So did I just fried my thratron tube?

The blue glow in the tube look very cool, but is the plate suppose to glow red hot during normal operation?
Also, I've read from somewhere that thyratron tubes can be used to generate X-rays, but will a flyback transformer even kick out enough voltage to do that?

Anything over 20kV will generally produce high enough energy xrays to get through the glass, so yes you probably Xrayed yourself a bit.

AFAIK internal arcing in tubes not meant for sustaining an arc destroys the inner workings. Also, most plates are not meant to glow bright red.

oops that wasn't a thyratron, it was just a vacuum rectifier, my bad

will it generate enough x-ray to do x-ray photography?

Ah, not too much of a loss then if it is just a thermionic diode.

Xray output depends on the HV current, the spacing between anode and cathode, and the thickness of the glass. You can give it a try, keep the HV under 70kV and you can use lead roofing sheets for shielding pretty effectively.

If you are unexperienced in radiation management and safety do not attempt radiography. Xray burns are a major hazard in soft xray radiography and are exceptionally gruesome/painful, not to mention you majorly up your cancer risk.
