Hello,
To improve the waveform of my sstc, I want to add a comparator, much like Steve Ward's earlier SSTCs. However, the pice for one DIP-8 of them is $8! Does anyone have a low cost sub with the proper package?

You don't really need a comparator. Just feed your feedback with clamping into a schmidt trigger inverter such as a SN74HC14. That chip costs about $0.20 and is fine for what you want to accomplish with a basic sstc.
You can always try a LT1016 comparator. Its a drop-in replacement for the MAX913, but just not as fast.
Also, Maxim is good with samples of their devices.

Keep in mind the LM311 is not a substitute for the MAX913. The MAX913 is an ultra-fast comparator with response times around 10ns - which i why i assume you were asking for a replacement.
The LM311 is generic general purpose comparator which is considerably slower than the MAX913.
The LT1016 is an ultra-fast comparator with similar 10ns response times.

Changing the driver circuit will unlock you to targeting those expensive ICs, EVR is right about the SN74HC14 thing, these are low cost, high reliable feedback acceptor on any SSTC/DRSSTC device (from antenna or in CT).
We recommend you to use the schematics on Mini SSTC by steve ward. Here in my country, we don't have UCC Ics so I have to replace the driving circuit to a discrete mode. (instead of insisting UCC, Although I have an option in ordering outside the country, I choose to design a replacement circuit with the components available here) it worked and it never failed.
One cannot simply replace fast response Comp to a slower one, it can give you more headache when it failed. Many things must be considered first, like your resonant frequency and etc.
