Hi all,
After many years of building SGTCs and a few years away from the workbench, I decided to venture into the world of solid state coils. Wanted to start simple and after doing a lot of research began with Steve Ward's Mini SSTC with some modifications like CT feedback and enhanced modulator. Other than that it's the same circuit with two Mosfets running at 170V DC.
Getting a max arc length of 10" with very little heating of the mosfets which is a positive. Need to tweak the primary a little, but am pretty happy with the results so far. Only one dead mosfet in the process Got much better results with the larger toroid seen in the photo.
I recently ordered your MiniBrute plans which is the next project. The GDT toroids you sent me helped get this coil operating - quality makes a difference - thanks again. This coil is actually using the CT feedback circuit from the minibrute (from the secondary, not the primary). Seems to work quite well.
Not sure if it's possible to get much more out of this coil without major changes. Now on to the mini-brute

Did some experimenting - reduced the primary to 3.8 turns of 3 AWG cable, with high coupling coef. Produced fat 15" arcs. The mosfets are finally starting to warm up after short runs, but that would be expected given the low inductance now. Still, I am surprised to see 15" from a small mosfet SSTC. I think I will quit while I am ahead and go back to about 5 turns - this is just an experimental coil.
