Hello everyone,

It's been a while since I posted here! I'm not sure if anyone here still remembers but I built my biggest 3200W Tesla Coil 2 back in 2004, and it has been collecting dust for a while since then. I recently had some time to rebuild it and performance is back up to normal!

See my webpage here for detailed day-by-day construction information as well as photographs and schematics. Link2

Some images of the new coil in action; does about 4 foot sparks at the moment:

Here's a video of the coil in action:

I haven't actually got it in tune yet because it's really loud and my parents remind me not to disturb the neighbours too much. It's currently tapped at turn 5.5 out of 10.

Cheers!

Thats really beautiful! Nice work on the MMCs!

What kind of spark gap is that? Is that running synchronous or asynchronous?

Nice coil, very neat build ! I like the pancake chokes smile

Now that you brought the coil back to life, do you plan on some further improvements ?

Thanks for the comments. It's an asychronous spark gap made from an angle grinder. When I first constructed the coil in 2004, that was the only motor I had on hand so everything was designed for it to run at 733bps (grinder spins at 15krpm). Four brass electrodes are attached to the disk so I get 4 breaks per rotation.

In this rebuild I managed to connect a variac to it and adjust the speed of the motor and it does produce better results at slightly lower speed. The coil is yet to be tuned carefully yet though!

Thanks!

Unfortunately the pancake chokes aren't used now because the original power supply didn't work too well. My current power supply is good enough for some 8kW but I have no power source to push it with.

If you compare the old and the new coil, the old build was more complex with a less elegant primary coil. The new one was designed to be smaller and with a much easier to clean and maintain design. Otherwise there aren't any major changes. Do you have suggestions how I could improve my coil?
