Found an article that suggests RG-8 can be used as an efficient conductor for HV applications up to 50kV. Is this true? What are the pros and cons of using the cheaper RG-8 cable for 50Kv instead of store bought HV wire? (already searched this forum's archives).

In the few HV labs I've visited, I have indeed seen RG-8 used for high voltage wire.
If you're OK with the grounded shield (which is a good idea in many HV applications for safety's sake) then it can't be beat.
I've seen "stress cones" shoved into the ends to terminate it to bare ends without too much field enhancement. I haven't a clue where you buy these, though.

Very interesting article !
It says RG-59 TV coaxial cable is not suitable because of foamed dielectric.
I used such cable (the inner wire after removing external insulation and ground mesh) at 10 kV but maybe it can stand more... its easy to find for cheap or even free.
Is this plain PE or foamed dielectric ? :
I have a good length of RG-213/U somewhere in my garage, I'll go dig in

Yes I have also seen the RG-213 sized solid PE cable used on bits of HV equipment I’ve obtained for parts/curiosity ect.
Coaxial cable will have some capacitance though, but I don’t see any issue with that for dc, other than it could stay charged like a capacitor on the output, so check before removing connectors.

When using RG-213 (with the shield grounded and PE insulation) for voltages approaching 50Kv, will it be necessary (or wise) to install STRESS CONES on the cable's ends?

We use RG8, RG213 @ work for most of our high voltage connections after around 20kV you notice leakage in the miroamp region. leakage seems to depend on the polyelthylene quality covering the inner conductor. Maximum voltage that we have used these cables for is 75kV namely on our Wein filter. These are the cables that Glassman use up to this voltage with no stress cones --just stop the outer earth conductor 10-12 inches before termiinating Use soldered connections with a generous amount of solder so as to form a ball to mitigate corona loss

Thanks to all the posters on this thread, you've been very helpful. This is a great forum.
Based on what I've learned here, I bought some new RG213 with PE insulation from an online vendor. The very next day a friend called and said that he is going to give 200 feet of RG6 to me (not yet sure if it has PE insulation or not, haven't seen it yet).
Question: is RG6 a viable alternative for RG213 for transmission of HV? Or would I be better off sticking with the RG213?
