Also, I remember reading that a particle accelerator powered by a Tesla coil was built in the 30s, before the VDG was invented. It was done at some American university, I can't remember the details.

I made a 160kv fullwave cocroft Walton voltage multiplier
I think it could be taken further with a coulomb of field shappers and a toride on the top. ZVS to generate the AC voltage or transformer you could use standard or fast 1N4007's mine was built with standard 1N4007 and a dual output ZVS. The other option would be to make a 3M vandergraph.
