In patent link used SOS-Diode, but СДЛ 0.4 1600 - HV rectifier diode with SOS-effect.See page 14.

Arc Quench. The HV output is inhibited for a short period after each load arc to help extinguish the arc.

Arc Sensing. Internal circuitry constantly senses and integrates arcs that occur over a given time. In the event a system or load arcing problem develops and exceeds factory-set parameters, the power supply will cycle off in an attempt to clear the fault and then automatically restart after a preset "off dwell time".

Oh... Well thats no fun! cry
what possible uses are there for 450Kv other then Arcing in the industry?

Plenty! Powering electron and ion guns, electrostatic precipitators, you name it.

In fact, most uses of high voltage don't involve arcing. I have a full-time job helping industry to get rid of unwanted arcs and partial discharges.

I can't read Russian, but I suspect this is actually a DSRD circuit and not SOS.

HV nanosecond pulse generator circuit may be used DSRD, SOS etc. inductor current breaker.
I told about metod for make 1MV and link to US patents. Link to Belkin.pdf - example making HV impulse
with cheap serial production russian diodes.

A large Van de Graaff generator could do it too.

The following is taken from wikipedia:

The largest air-insulated Van de Graaff generator in the world, built by Dr. Van de Graaff in the 1930s, is now on permanent display at Boston's Museum of Science. With two conjoined 4.5 meter (15 foot) aluminium spheres standing on columns 22 feet (6.7 m) tall, this generator can often reach 2 MV (2 million volts).

Link2

Thus I would add the Van de Graaff generator to the list of 'suspects'.
I assume the 5 MV generator is insulated with sulfur hexaflouride, which should be do-able for a serious hobbyist.

Maybe, but I go there a lot and don't find it very impressive. It stands floor to ceiling with two columns and conjoined spheres about 50' tall. So it's phisicsl size detracts from the size of the sparks produced. But the demo guy has a clone of Steve's drsstc 2 which is indeed very impressive.

I would go with a marx as well. Or a vm, but the corona on an ac vm would be extremely lossy as pointed out.

Tom: both Steve ward and Eric goodchild both have been doing work recently that points out that the topload voltage on a drsstc isn't quite as it seems. it's blatently obvious on a qcw, but that helped us to begin to question the ~10kv/cm rule. Even the largest drsstcs probably. Ever have more that a couple hundred thousand volts max.

Hi

This thread is not about making impressive arcs, it is about reaching a 1 Mega Volt potential diffrence. I have serious doubts if a DRSSTC is ever going to reach that, despite its impressive arcs; something which is not important in this thread.
I know 4HV is mostly about impressive arcs, but not in this particular thread.

A megavolt is pretty big. I'm aiming for ~650kV, using a 50kV full bridge powering a Cockroft-Walton inside the vacuum chamber, using VMI diodes from RS and capacitor plates, to eliminate outgassing issues.

Read some of my threads for more details.

A large rod of piezoelectric material suspended under a falling weight should produce a mega-volt pulse, would be easy to build too!

How much would you be willing to pay if there was a compact 1 million volt generator that you could buy. power output less than 100 watts. 10000 dollars?

Is it even possible to put 1MV DC on something "compact" while having less than 100W in corona losses? If it were a CW multiplier, it would need to be something like 6ft tall with a 12" x 48" toroid on top.
