i think ccw parts need to be rated for 2x the output voltage.

Becuase it is easier to get voltage out than power. what engineering limitations are there to a CCW stack besides insulation?

Capacitors. Voltage droop under load from a multiplier is proportional to 1/C, so if you want to not sag to some absurdly low voltage under load you'll need large caps.

And also a high frequency high voltage supply. I think that you will need more power than an AC flyback for a megavolt. something as awesome as this: Link2 would work.
A Marx generator would be a lot simpler, because you can use DC flybacks, and there are many designs for driving them.
May I ask what you want a megavolt for?

Start with 2MV and use a big potential divider? smile

Use the metod from "Light-weight DC to very high voltage DC converter"
Link2

Except SOS diodes can't actually be bought through normal channels, and a stack of them capable of holding off 1 MV is probably going to cost you a pretty penny.

why not design a flyback transformer with very long core and wind on that?

The insulation required would be insane

Russian avalanche diode СДЛ 0.4 1600 (0.4А 160kV ) have SOS effect - price ~$80.
HV rectifier diode КЦ107Г (500mA 15kV) - another candidat into HV SOS effect generator - price ~$5.

Do you happen to a link to an online store which sells those HV rectifiers? 500 mA at 15 kV for 5$ is a bargain, with or without SOS.

PS. what kind of current do you have to pulse them at to get the SOS effect? (AFAIK SOS requires very high current densities, unlike say DSRD which happens at current densities in the same order of magnitude as normal diode operation.)

PPS. I was able to find those 160kV rectifier posts in some Russian online shops ... but the price was ~4000 Euro, a bit shy of 80$.
