Maplins currently have an in car charger on offer this weekend, which will charge at 15,16,18,19,20, 22 and 24 V.
My Compaq laptop charger says it outputs 18.5V. The Maplins description says it will charge at 18V or 19V. I assume this means I can't use it to charge my laptop. Is my assumption correct?

I've got one of those Maplin chargers, and I had the same issue of half a volt out... in my experience laptops aren't all that voltage sensitive, it'll probably work with either 18 or 19v. I think mine's set to 18v and it powers all my laptops

My 18.5v rated HP laptop charges fine down to 15v and the highest I've gone is 20, no problems so far. I don't think laptops are all that sensitive as most just pass the input to one or more voltage regulators anyway.

Thanks for the replies.
I assumed the laptop would have sufficient regulation, but it's good to know that others have used these chargers with 18.5V HP/Compaq laptops without any problems.
I need a new battery anyway, but £10 for a Maplins universal charger is a lot less than a new battery pack, and allows me to use it anywhere with a 12V car battery.
