I wouldn't exactly call it Darwinism. It's in one of the poorest countries in the world, and a chance to a profitable substance would send them racing to it. It's like if a money truck tipped over, spilling thousands of hundred dollar bills onto petrol. Lot of greedy people will rush up to get them, despite the fire hazard. Except in the other case, it isn't greed, its out of necessity to survive. The latter situation would be Darwinism. Darwinism is just pure idiocity that causes death. The situation isn't idiocity, its out of necessity for the poor Nigerians to survive, if they can sell the fuel.

There was a comment on the Nigerian TV news website to the effect that Nigerians just can't resist freebies. Bear in mind that they invented the 419 scam.
I'm sad to hear of such a terrible accident, but I can't help feeling that the Darwin awards are deserved.
My favourite Darwin Award story is the one about the police officer in the Philippines who stubbed out a cigarette in a bucket of TNT confiscated from terrorists.

Don't get me wrong. I am sorry to hear of anyone dying, but this is Darwinism. It is survival or lack of survival from attempts to adapt to the environment. In this case, there method for adapting to such poor conditions was to take fuel from a burning gas tanker. This is a poor survival skill and hence those with that mindset are now extinct. Those who were smart enough, despite the poverty, to resist the temptation are alive.

To be fair, the tanker only caught fire some time after the crash. At least thats how it was reported here. So these folks were not trying to get fuel out of a burning tanker. Even so, its still a huge risk approaching a huge pool of volatile fuel.
