you can use a PFC+step down ferrite transformer for an "all in one solution" up to 1kva easy, they sell IC's for this purpose with line, 100-265Vac, low voltage, inrush current limit, programmable limits and so on type safety features, i cant remember my preferred part number atm. ill look it up at home for yah...

I agree with bwang. A flyback is a good solution and is only limited by the core.
...
But wait,
Flyback circuits are for generating output voltages which are higher than the input voltage right?
That's not what I need, I need 230V -> 0-50V
Or am I wrong?

Look for a Xantrex XHR series power supply on EBay. smile They come with 1kW output in several voltage ranges: I picked up the 0-150V, 6A one quite cheaply.

You misunderstood how zero voltage switching works. The whole idea of a SMPS is that it converts the line frequency ("50Hz") to a higher frequency. Even then, skipping whole cycles isn't a popular control scheme. The Xantrex unit uses an H-bridge (of IRFP460 MOSFETs) with phase-shift control. Small snubber caps across the FETs give zero voltage switching. Or zero current, I forgot which.

the IC is FAN4800IN from fairchild, etch a board stuff it and you can make your own smps, they include the math and circuit examples and explanations for using it.

I agree with bwang. A flyback is a good solution and is only limited by the core. But if you don't care about isolation, you could do a mains buck converter to eliminate the core. Keep in mind that you'll need a logic supply transformer(or another smps) to power the low voltage control circuit.

But I agree with the smps idea. I powered my zvs flyback driver off of a 12 smps and got a nice quiet hiss, but the I wanted more power. So I rewound a mot, got a 35vdc off of it, but the 15v 60hz ripple (see he exploding lytic thread :D) voltage put a humm on he arc.

I think the OP wants a step down supply, so direct buck down from mains would be inefficient.
And no, flybacks aren't just step-up. If you use a step-down transformer it steps down (Vo=D/(1-D)*N*Vin)
