im building a 6 segment richard quick spark gap for my SGTC. what is the recommended spacing between segments?

There's no way to answer that unless you provide the output voltage of your HV transformer and the number of individual gap segments in your spark gap assembly.
Typical construction is 5-8 segments for a 12 or 15 kV NST-powered coil, with .025" to .04" spacing per gap.
