hi,

i have this hdd hub motor, it has 3 pins, any idea of the pinout?
its not a dc motor, cuz when i connect it to a battery directly it just jerks and then stops as i expected...
i thought that if its a 3 phase motor it would need 4 pins, common and each end of the star configuration
(the chassis of the motor is not another pin btw)

thanks in advance, alf

It'll be a three-phase motor - if it were delta wound there would be no neutral connection, and if it were star wound there would be no need to connect he star/neutral anyway as it's a balanced load (also on a simple 6 switch inverter, there's nowhere to connect the neutral anyway).

You can build a simple little inverter using 3 gate drive ICs instead of fiddling around with individual transistors.

If it is a 3 phase AC motor, you could try connecting a capacitor, (10 uFd)
between any two wires. Then connect AC, from your Variac, across the free
wire, and one of the two going to the capacitor.

If it rotates, then try the AC to the other leg going to the capacitor. This
may reverse rotation.

You can use ESC for remote control car/aircraft.

I tried it before and make a small Grinding machine using an old HDD.

I'm curious dose enyone know how to build an ESC for a brushless motor (or have a basic circuit to build off of)

stepper motor circuits are out there... and IC's too. but they can get kind of complicated for 3 phase stuff, since you need sensor feedback and or emf feedback, id reccomend getting a 10 to 20 amp ESC from a hobby place. depends your motor and on what you want to do too.

Electronic Speed Control, ESC.

EDIT: it should be noted that there are many types of brushless motors (i think this is what radiotech is alluding too.) Relecutance, stepper, ac phase, and so on...

thanks for your replies,

sorry i took to long to reply... heh

it works with single phase AC, but at 50hz, not very fast, i need to get my sig gen working! (damaged with HV arc) :D
