Greets!

I want to run a full wave rectifier from my 35KV potential transformer to charge a bank of five 50KV capacitors in a Marx configuration. Currently I am doing so with a single chain of diodes, but this only offers 18KV to the bank, so I need a full wave rectifier. I am only running at 60Hz, so fast recovery is not necessary.

I have seen the 1N4007 series projects, but found a 4000v diode for almost the same price (100 pieces for $30.00)...

Link2

My plan is to make up 4 chains of 15 series diodes and then solder the 4 chains into a large full wave rectifier (60 diodes used in total). This should offer a rectifier capable of taking 60KV.
Has anyone done this with success? Could there be a cheaper way to do this?

Thanks,
Brad

Halfwave rectification should allow for the same peak voltages, so I don't see the problem here...

You would only get 60kv if the diodes are avalanche rated

I guess my DC HV meter is reading only 18KV then due to the 30Hz chopped DC output...

Hv2

Maybe I will charge up a cap and see if it reaches the 30KV level. I know there is going to be losses with a half wave rectifier, but I could live with a few KV missing.

But for $30, why not just build a full wave rectifier? That's my thinking. At 60Hz, the Marx will charge at twice the speed.

You can get 500 1N4007s for $7.50: Link2

If you buy them from mouser, they will come on cut tape.

Thanks, that is a good deal. Much less painful (on the budget) when things go wrong and you are picking the little plastic bits out of the ceiling tiles!
