im looking for some input and advice for a connector to tap the primary of my tesla coil. i have an alligator clip, but it sticks up above the strike rail and it touches the adjacent windings. what have you used for yours? is it OK if the wire that connects to the tap rests on the outside windings that arent being used?

No it is not OK, it creates a shorted turn that will affect performance of the coil, if not melt the alligator clip. The classic solution is to use a spring clip from a fuse holder.
